The Rolling Stones and ABKCO

Picture

The Story

"The Rolling Stones have been called the World's Greatest Rock Band but they are also one of the most iconic brands in the world. Getting to co-brand with the Stones would be the dream of any licensing professional so I was more than excited to work with ABKCO on promotions for the high quality vinyl releases of some of the Stones' most legendary albums. I met with the marketing reps at Amazon and determined a "bundle" would be the most desirable approach - a Fender Telecaster guitar (not unlike Keith's) adorned front and back with the gate fold art for Beggar's Banquet, a limited edition opaque vinyl, custom Beggar's Banquet art shipping box and a wall hanger for the guitar, because after all, this package would appeal to more than just guitarists but collectors as well.

Understandably, because this had never been tried before, Fender decided to limit it to 300 packages - yet in the first 10 days alone, Amazon computers generated order for three times that!"  -  Del Breckenfeld

Hendrix and The Hard Rock

Picture

The Story

"The Hard Rock Cafe International contacted us for a picture of Jimi Hendrix as part of their campaign for he 40th Anniversary. I asked what the connection to Jimi was and they told me that the artist who was commissioned for the 40th Anniversary project, the legendary Alan Aldridge, created the original Hard Rock Cafe logo, the House of Blues logo and the Beatles' Apple Records logo. Jimi was introduced to Alan by Paul McCartney who, along with the other Beatles, were championing Jimi (it was Paul who convinced Lou Adler to add Jimi to the Monterey Pop Festival and the rest is history). Jimi asked Alan to design his next album art but Alan was too booked already but agreed to design art for his guitar based on Jimi's song concepts. The guitar was never finished because of Jimi's untimely passing but we worked with Alan Aldridge and Janie Hendrix and the guitar was finally completed 40 years after Jimi conceptualized it. A T-shirt featuring the art guitar sold over $10 million through Hard Rock locations with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Fender Music Foundation and the initiative to build a park in Jimi's name near his boyhood Seattle home." Budweiser Bow Tie Guitar

Major League Baseball

The Story

"My sales manager at Dean Guitars said he went to a Van Halen concert and bassist Michael Anthony was playing a Jack Daniels' bass guitar shaped like the bottle. He said we should create a Budweiser guitar and I said, "Cool, but why Bud?' He said he liked Budweiser and thought we would get free beer! That was good enough for me so I went to the owner Dean Zelinsky and he said the idea had merit but we should do the guitar like the Budweiser bow-toe logo and offer them a music promotion campaign along with the guitars. I made contact with their marketing department in St. Louis and two minutes into the meeting they ordered a 1,000 guitars! We were also brought on-board for their music promotions and ended up working on the Rolling Stones' mammoth Steel Wheels tour promotions."  -  Del Breckenfeld

The Story

"I had always loved baseball and a close friend on mine, Loren Harriet, produced Yankee legend Bernie Williams' album. Bernie is a top flight guitarist and he was planning on playing Take Me Out to Ball Game' at he new Yankee Stadium season opener. We created a Yankees' guitar which is now permanently in the Hard Rock in the park. Loren, being from Boston, really wanted to do something special for the 100th Anniversary of Fenway so we created a beautiful Fenway commemorative guitar as a fund-raiser for their Jimmy Fund charity. A duplicate ended up in Cooperstown and let to a licensing deal with all of Major League Baseball and a 75th Anniversary Baseball Hall of Fame guitar."  -  Del Breckenfeld
